BLE Blank Module(BVMCN5102-BK)

Braveridge has developed an easy-to-use and cost effective BLE module under a collaboration with Nordic Semiconductor.
Braveridge, although being a small company, has entered into the module industry, turning product development into practical development with BLE, the ultimate radio standard.
Compared to major module manufacturers, Braveridge brings a unique approach to product development and sales.

Between 2012 to 2013 was a golden age for ground finding including kickstarter. Most of the users were originally web programmers/app programmers. They have flown their way out of the development which was limited inside the monitor and shown their new way to physical computing combining hardware. US is taking a leading part in this movement, and now software developers are penetrating into the hardware world. Engineers who were almost never interested in hardware previously are engaged in development by themselves and now finding their success.

This module project, 'Nordic Blank Module', originated with Mr. Yamashita a country manager of Nordic Semiconductor Japan, was launched by 5 companies from Japan. Braveridge is one of them.

Basic concept

①Blank module is a Certified Module
Module certification for Japan Radio Law, FCC, and CE(*)have been obtained, therefore, no testing or certifications are required.
As QDID has been obtained by Bluetooth SIG, BT certification test is not required.
Since certification is obtained, development is possible following the Radio Law in Japan (and other certified countries)
It is against the radio law to develop with modules which are not certified under the radio law.

   
②Users developing own programming
Developers develop application softwares by themselves.
Generally there will be no support from the Blank module suppliers.
Braveridge will disclose information related to product developments, which will also include
unsuccessful cases.

  'Why Developers develop by themselves?'、
・For some companies, it is common to outsource their design planning. We also receive many inquiries for BLE software development. In reality, BLE software development is not a huge task, which should be manageable without outsourcing. In fact, there was a web programmer who has never touched Nordic IC has come to handle the development kit for the first time, and managed to operate in 2 days based on Nordic Semiconductor's sample code. This programmer happened to participate in a contest and has won a prize!
It is very possible to complete development with just a little effort.
   
・OS for iOS/Android are frequently upgraded. Major updates are done yearly.
We must be able to keep up and be adaptable with the changing fast pace. Just as the functional updates, our development work should be adapting to circumstances.
We have just stepped into this era and BLE has just begun. It is not too late, with ideas and speed we can find success!
   
・Firmware development can be done quite easily with software engineers. It only needs getting used to for speedy results.

* If functional IC control at peripheral is more than 2pcs, it is safer to have an independent engineer at the side of Firmware. This does not count memory control, LED control, or buzzer control etc. If the funtion count increases such as 6 axis sensor, 9 axis sensor, temperature humidity sensor, air pressure sensor, it becomes more complicated, therefore, an independent software engineer working on Firmware development has produced better results.
@ product development on accelerator sensor (3x) = app/apps development engineer : 1 engineer should develop Firmware. If the functional IC controlled at the side of peripheral, app/apps development engineer is able to manage with some knowledge. There are many cases where one web programmer develops both App/Apps and BLE Firmware.

>>Hardware becomes very simple with modules.
>>BLE products will be mainly on the development of peripherals.
As many of these are simple functions, development time on hardware is shortened and time can be allocated on software development and app development. Why not invest in self-development since hardware development is made simple and software is 'exciting'!
   
③Fully utilize sample library for developers

Product Key is provided when you purchase Nordic's Evaluation kit or Braveridge's development kit(not evaluation kit).

There are venture companies new to wireless industry such as Web programmers, App programmers, MCU software programmers, small-medium sized companies and MNC's have already started developments on this technology. A few amazing engineers managed to make it work in a few days. The hurdle is not too high.

Introduction of Our Bluetooth LE Blank Module

Bluetooth LE Blank Module(commonly called:BLE Module/Blank Module)

 *Additionally we are preparing to apply for countries with module certificates.

We have obtained various certificates as above.
Therefore, it is perfectly legal under the Radio Law to engage in development using Braveridge's certified module or development tools in Japan. You are free from worries of Radio laws and enables you to safely work on product development.
 *Many of the development tools handled and sold in the general market inside and out of Japan do not have proper Radio Law certificates.

When you are shifting to mass-production, you will not be required for Radio law certificates for each country and regardless of the production volume, finished goods can be shipped without any problems.
 *Starting 2014 February, BTsig's operation has changed. You are required to pay BTsig a registration fee for EPL. We will introduce you to the details in our pages, however, please also contact the BTsig page or BT certificate agents.   

(*)CE Marking
CE marking is a self-certified system for finished products.
There is no certification procedure. By affixing the CE marking on a product, a manufacturer is declaring at its sole responsibility, conformity with all of the legal requirements to achieve CE marking.
In general, perform the test at the certifying facility, create a test report and keep the reports at your company.

Basic requirement tests consist 3 tests ①RADIO ②EMC ③SAFETY
If you are using a certified BLE module, you can skip ①RADIO test(highest cost) as finished goods.
However, 2 categories ②EMC ③SAFETY must be tested for each finished product, and must keep the report.
You can obtain CE marking for module itself, however, there is no merit. Therefore, we are not obtaining CE marking for module alone.
①You may contact us for PDF documents as RADIO test is completed, you are not required to perform the testing.

Covered in anti-static bag, one bag can fit 10 trays (total 1000pcs, 1 tray=100pcs).
A list of part details are pasted on top of the bag.
In the near future, packaging is planned to change to "vacuum and silica gel" pack.
There is no issue with the exisiting condition as it is MSL1, however, packing will be changed due to customers' request.

Bluetooth Low Energy Development Tool


Braveridge has launched various development boards for developers.
1. BVMCN5102_BK Kit (On sale now)                    
This is a basic kit for developers who can develop the main PCB where the module is mounted.
BVMCNDT52: We have made the daughter board in order to mount the bread board effectively so that software development is made possible directly.
BVMCN5102_BK:The application of this is to practically layout the design on the main board, and mount the BLE module on the prototype PCB to implement test running.

The old version of the daughter board came with an open space on the antenna area of the module,
however, it has been improved to prevent from accidental breaking.

For Rev1.3, each board indicates function display for nRF51822.

Two jumper pin is made to separate module itself by Avdd and DVdd, evaluation board also is made to be able to separate. It is also made to press the DIP switch on 2P.

The pitch has been arranged so that it can be inserted perfectly on the standard breadboard crossing over the gap. Three of ABC & three of HIJ can be used. Currently upgraded to Rev1.3.

3. BVMCN5102_AP Kit
AP board kit is a small evaluation board mounting the typical sensors on the main PCB which is around the size of CR2032 coin battery.
PCB built-in with small sensors+CR2032 socket allows you to feel of actual size, and start evaluation and examination immediately.
Your development can be something new using the actual size, rather than connecting wires and power supply to a huge breadboard.
The mounted sensors etc. are professional specifications carefully selected by Braveridge.

A library by Sensirion is used for this App. For Firmware, our own demo library is used here. We made our very own profile, adjusting with the original profile used by Sensirion's App. You may be able to find the tips of creating profiles with this demo.
We plan to combine the data from air pressure sensor on top of this.

A general App is being used here for the buzzer, but we are able to provide an exclusive library (profile) upon request. The drive IC for the buzzer will be made into modules for reasonable costs, which will be mounted on the universal PCB for usage.

You may use a standard 1.27mm pitch header soldering it directly, but it is more convenient to use spring header.

AP-UNV board is a simplified universal board with power supply port. 47 pad can be used.
You can create LED circuit, insert buzzer or put a board etc. on AP-UNI.

With 5mm spacer spring pin header, distance from main board or antenna of the module can be maintained.
Trial run is made possible with a board size of a wrist watch. You may confirm the operation on this board and move on to actual layout of the board.

*Debugging by j-Link Lite SEGGER is a little inconvenient as it only allows 1 round of setup till the breaking point. After stopping at break point, you cannot resume again. This is due to the stopping of BT wireless transmission and impossible to resume. This is fatal to BLE development.
 At this point, by using this extended debug board, you are able to bring debug log on the program via UART to serial output on the PC.

If DFU function's UART transmission is activate, this extended debug board can rewrite the program
via this extended board.
*Firmware for DFU is required to be written by j-Link Lite SEGGER initially.

It depends on your ideas how and what you would like to set the output.

Standard UART port is also reserved as an independent terminal, therefore, besides modules developments, it can be used as a USB-UART board.


4. Bluetooth Low Energy Developer Board+(Expected Release date: June 15, 2014)
Various sensors and active elements suggested by Braveridge have come together in one board as a Development Board.
By standardizing the mounting of various sensing ICs enables to materialize developer's ideas into development in no time. 
As the high performance sensor devices selected by Braveridge are already mounted on the board, you will be hassle free from PCB creation, and enables you to work directly on Firmware/App development to test and try.
You may work on the development on this developer board, and once Firmware is written on the AP Kit, testing and trial is possible under the real environment.

6.AA Battery Beacon(BVMCN1101AA) Evaluation Kit(Expected release date: June 10, 2014 )
⇒Very shortly, plastic casing mold will be completed.  After the required tests for reliability, product will be released officially. 
 Battery life is expected to last a few years using the Broadcast transmission as basic Beacon specifications. 
You may also have LED flashing in various colors ⇒Battery life depends on the usage of LED.
 For Connected type of data transmission Beacon, this AA battery type is recommended.
 It is also recommended for BONDING type of transmission.


7.AC Adaptor Beacon(BVMVCN1201AC) Evaluation Kit(Under Development)
⇒This is a Beacon using an AC adaptor which allows continuous motion having AC adaptor directly installed.
 We will be launching an amazing Beacon nobody has come up with shortly. Electrical evaluation has completed and obviously PSE will be obtained to be shipped.
 Without the worries of power supply, similar to BVMCN1101AA, it can be used as Connected type/BONDINGtype of transmission specifications.
